Consider the following factors when buying a motorized precision linear stage:
Load Capacity, Stiffness, and Size
Consider the size, mass, and inertia of the object that the linear stage will need to move. A miniature stage might have the right on-center load capacity, but a lengthy, off-centered load could provide too much torque for the bearings to handle. A stage with a higher load capacity will provide a longer lifetime in high duty cycle applications.
Bearing Type
In general, cross-roller bearings provide higher load capacity and better geometric performance than ball bearings. Air bearings provide the highest accuracy and lifetime since they are friction-free and maintenance -free.
Travel Range
This refers to the total distance that the stage can move. When stacking stages for XY applications, consider the bottom stage to have a relatively wide base compared to the travel range of the top stage to reduce bending moments.

How Does a Linear Stage Work
Typically, objects can rotate along any of three axes, giving the object six degrees of freedom: three rotational and three translational. The linear stage restricts five of these axes, allowing the object to move on only one translational axis. When used properly, the linear stage provides a superior finished product quickly and efficiently.
The stage is comprised of a platform and base that are conjoined by a guide or linear bearing. This joining restricts the platform to linear motion. A linear stage also commonly utilizes a stepper motor. A stepper motor is a brushless, synchronous electric motor that can convert digital pulses into mechanical shaft rotations. A lead screw or worm gear drive are often accompany of a stepping motor to further linear motion control. For best results, a step motor can be used in conjunction with a stepping motor driver in microstep mode.
